“American Idol” down to final three

First of all, why is the “American Idol” results show still an hour long with only four contestants left? These results shows are packed with more filler than a goose-down pillow — all fluff and very little substance.

Can’t we cut this down to a half hour? Does anybody really enjoy watching the group numbers — this week it was a corny (is there any other way on “Idol?”) version of Steely Dan’s “Reelin’ in the Years” — or a watching a spot on the top 4’s trip to Vegas to take in a show? Or watching the contestants take insipid phone call questions from the “Idol” fanbase watching at home? Or taking in a performance from Maroon 5, who have nothing to do with “American Idol” save for they can fill up another four minutes with one of their songs? Or taking in a Bo Bice (remember him from season 4?) performance?

We at Idol Speculation want the results show to be five minutes long. Here is how it would go: Host Ryan Seacrest comes out and introduces the contestants and the judges. Two minutes of commericals (to make some money). We come back and Seacrest/Executioner looks at one of the Idols and says “(INSERT NAME HERE), you are going home tonight.” Cue the music, get a tight close up on the tearful face of the loser, then fade to black so the viewing public can gratefully turn the channel to something entertaining, like a “Mama’s Family” rerun.

But instead we viewers at home get a full hour of pomp, circumstance and banality just to get down to the final few minutes, when we finally learn the grim fate of one of the contestants.

Fortunately, we like to cut to the chase here on Idol Speculation, so here is brief recap of what happened tonight.

David Archuleta? Safe.

David Cook? Safe.

That left Syesha Mercado and Jason Castro as the bottom two.

Mercado is good, although not as good as Cook and Archuleta, and she performed well last night.

Castro flubbed some lyrics on Tuesday, picked some dull tunes (”I Shot the Sheriff” and “Mr. Tambourine Man”) that failed to showcase his voice and basically seemed disinterested in the whole thing last night.

Castro was predicted by most to be heading home (Cowell even told the singer last night to “pack your suitcase”), and there were no surprises in store tonight as Castro was canned.

We’ll miss Castro’s cool dreads and affable personality here at Idol Speculation, but it was his time to go.

Two weeks left now until we find out who is the season 7 winner of “American Idol.” Tune in to “Idol” Tuesday to watch the top 3 perform, then check out the Idol Speculation blog to get the rundown on how the two Davids and Syesha did.
